i know, it's rather late and untimely but it's new!

Taylor stood outside of his house with both of his hand shoved so hard into his pockets he could feel the seams starting to tear from the pressure. A cigarette danged from his lips, dangerously close from being taken away by the wind ash by ash. His hand flew from his pocket, but only to shove a stray strand of blonde hair from his vison of Natalie standing across from him, leaning against the front door.

Her hand was resting against the door frame and the other lingered on her stomach as if she was trying to draw even more attention to her pregnancy. It had been a little over a week since she had told him, and they had finally decided it was time to tell their parents. Taylor wondered how they didn't know already. Just looking at her, Taylor knew she was pregnant. It could have been the way she was holding herself, the tiny stomach that was starting to peek over her jeans. Or maybe it was the glow that came from her face that only a soon-to-be mother can have. No matter what it was, Taylor was ready to tell them. He just had to get in the front door.

"If not now, then when?" Natalie's voice broke Taylor's thoughts and he took the cigarette from his mouth and smashed it on the brown deck. "We really should tell them now."

"Yeah, I know."

Natalie walked over and flung her arms around Taylor, standing on her tip toes to reach him. "We'll be fine. We've got it all planned out, Tay. I want to marry you, you know."

"Yeah, I know."

She pulled away, smiling only a little. "Is that all you're going to say?"

"Would you want to marry me if you weren't pregnant?" He asked quickly, staring at the door behind Natalie as if it held the answer.

"Of course, I told you before."

"I'm sorry, Natalie, I... I just don't know what to do right now. I know we can't keep this from them forever. Christ, Nat, I think they already know, just look at you." He reached his arm out and his hand trailed across her cheek. "I don't know how they can't see it."

Natalie grabbed Taylor's hand as it rested on her check. "Then we should go in and tell them. Tell them we are getting married and going to have this child and we are going to do everything to make it work. And if they don't want us to... then I don't know. But I don't think that'll happen."

Taylor nodded and stepped closer, pulling Natalie into a hug. "Let's go."

It had gone better than Taylor had thought. Or, at least, when his brain caught up to the world, he would remember exactly what happened beyond his intitial "so, Natalie's pregnant and we're getting married." The rest of the conversation seemed like a dream. His parents and Natalie's sat there talking and talking, and he got a few words in there, but for the life of him he couldn't remember what was said. All he knew was at the end of it all Natalie was smiling, and that's all he really cared about.

Now he stood outside of the house on the porch swing, trying to breathe it all in. He barely even saw Kate trod up the stairs and when she was suddenly sitting beside him, he gave a little jump.

"Taylor, I need to talk to you."

He nodded. "It went well in there, I think. At least we made it out alive."

"Oh," Kate said, placing her hand on Taylor's knee and grinning. "It isn't about that. It's about you, mister, and my best friend."

Taylor cocked an eyebrow up, but let Kate continue. "You know Natalie has been my best friend since forever, and that means if you hurt her it gives me diplomatic rights to kill you or worse."

Taylor laughed, and Kate's arms flew out, swapping his shoulder.

"Don't laugh, this is important."

Taylor nodded, stifling his laughter. "Go on then."

"Anyway. She loves you, believe me, I've asked her enough to know. She loves you a lot more then I've ever seen her love anyone else before. She would have married you even if she wasn't pregnant. Therefore I need to make sure you aren't going to hurt her. Because, like I said, if you do I'll kill you. Natalie's very important to me and apparently you're very important to her. So just take care of her and the baby and don't do anything stupid, alright? And if anything ever happens you know I'm here to talk to you too. I think by default this makes me your best-friend-in-law and I'm willing to take on that burden. Alright?"

Taylor grinned and put his arm around Kate's shoulder. "You didn't even have to have this conversation with me, Kate. I love Natalie more than anything else, and there is no way I'd ever hurt her. Even without your threat of death, you know that? You've got nothing to worry about."

She smiled and moved closer to Taylor and kicked the ground with her feet, sending the swing in motion. "That's what I thought but I just wanted to confirm, is all."

"Hey," Taylor grinned. "Maybe if Zac ever pops the question you'll be more then just a best-friend-in-law, but really my new sister."

Kate laughed and rolled her eyes. "He wouldn't anytime soon. It's Zac we're talking about, he has a bit more sense than you about things. I doubt he'll turn 20 and decide it's time to get married or something."

They both laughed as the swing rocked back and forth.
